Government Retractions December 2021

As companies of various sizes and individuals across the globe look for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, it appears that certain governments are about to renege on the commitments and promises they made at COP26 in Glasgow. Not surprising, but both disappointing and annoying.

We – and many others – work with clients to provide a framework and a strategy aimed at reducing global warming. It’s not easy for many companies, especially SMEs, and often they need encouragement towards, and positive re-enforcement about, the steps they are taking.

Is this the example which will encourage long-term, strategic, planning for climate change initiatives? It’s not only carbon, methane is a far greater long-term threat to the planet. The arguments about the benefits of addressing climate change are well rehearsed, but for anyone who continues to be hesitant and/or unsure as to what contribution they can make this news may make it more difficult to persuade them to take any meaningful action.

It begs the question – are many governments merely greenwashing? Or are politicians abrogating their responsibility for leadership at the altar of political expediency?
