New National Forest Initiative to Plant 20 Million Trees
The UK government has announced an ambitious plan to plant 20 million trees and create 2,500 hectares (6,178 acres) of new woodland in the west of England as part of a major "national forest" initiative.
The Western Forest will integrate new and existing woodlands across Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, the Cotswolds, and the Mendips. It will also extend into urban areas such as Bristol, Swindon, and Gloucester, enhancing green spaces for both people and wildlife.
This is the first of three new national forests pledged by the government to support the legally binding goal of increasing England’s woodland cover to 16.5% by 2050. While this alone won’t solve climate change, it represents a significant step toward a greener future, demonstrating the government’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges.
